Vinyl banner material is typically measured in ounces per square yard, with common weights ranging from 10oz for short-term indoor or lightweight use up to 18oz for heavier-duty outdoor banners that need to withstand wind and repeated installation.

Heavier vinyl resists tearing and stretching better, which matters most for banners that will be hung outdoors for extended periods or reused across multiple events rather than displayed once and discarded.

Finishing Options: Grommets, Hems, and Pole Pockets

Grommets, the metal rings set into a banner's edges, are the standard finishing option for banners that will be hung with rope, zip ties, or bungee cords. Hemmed edges reinforce the banner against tearing at attachment points, which is standard alongside grommet placement.

Pole pockets, sewn sleeves along one or more edges, are used when a banner will be mounted on a frame or hung between poles rather than tied at individual grommet points, which gives a cleaner, more tensioned appearance.

Indoor Retractable Banner Stands

Retractable, or pull-up, banner stands are a popular format for trade shows, retail point-of-sale displays, and events where a banner needs to be set up and taken down quickly without grommets or external hardware. The banner rolls into a self-contained base for easy transport.

These stands typically use a slightly different vinyl or polypropylene material designed to roll smoothly without creasing, which differs from the heavier-weight material used for grommet-hung outdoor banners.

Sizing and Layout Considerations

Banner size should account for both the viewing distance and the venue. A banner hung across a storefront entrance needs different proportions than one displayed at a trade show booth or stretched across a fence line at an outdoor event.

Text and logo sizing within the banner layout should scale with the overall banner size and intended viewing distance, since a design that looks balanced at a small preview size can read very differently once printed at full scale.
