How LED Signage Works

LED signs use light-emitting diodes, either embedded directly into a channel letter or panel, or arranged behind a face material like acrylic to create edge-lit or backlit illumination. Compared to older neon tube lighting, LED diodes use significantly less power and have a longer operational lifespan before needing replacement.

Most LED business signage falls into two categories: static illuminated signs, where the LEDs simply backlight a fixed design, and dynamic LED displays, which can change content digitally. This page covers static illuminated LED signage; programmable digital displays are a separate product.

Where LED Signs Are Typically Installed

LED signage is most common for storefront identification, since illumination extends a business's visibility into evening hours without relying on external floodlighting. It's also used for interior reception walls, channel letter installations, and backlit panel displays.

Because LED modules generate relatively little heat compared to older lighting technology, they can be used safely behind acrylic and other plastic substrates without the risk of warping the material over time.

Design and Visibility Considerations

LED color temperature affects how a sign reads at night. Cooler white tones tend to read as brighter and more modern, while warmer tones can feel more inviting for restaurant or hospitality signage. Color options beyond white and warm white are also available for branded signage.

Sign size and LED density both affect overall brightness and even illumination. A panel that's too large for its LED count can show uneven hot spots, so module spacing is calculated based on the sign's final dimensions.

Maintenance and Lifespan

LED modules used in signage typically carry a multi-year operational lifespan under normal use, which is considerably longer than fluorescent or neon tube lighting. Because the diodes are sealed within the sign components, maintenance generally involves checking the power supply and connections rather than replacing individual bulbs.
